a Graeco γλάφω; Aeolico σγάλπω, et Sculpere, a Graeco γλύφω, Aeolic. σγύλπω, uti origine, sic et significatione, conveniunt. Usus tamen et consuerudo obtinuit, ut de his, quae ad signandum cavantur, scalptura proprie diceretur: sculpere vero, caelare sigillis eminentibus notaret. Unde scalptas genmas, et scalpturam gemmarum, in antiquis libris fere semper legere est, non sculptas: quae videl. σφραγίδων usum praebebant, hôc modô scalptae, εντυπώματα clementi; τὰ ἔντυπα enim dicuntur, quae intus depressa sunt et incisa. Contra ectypae gemmae dicebantur, quae eminentem et expressam haberent imaginem. Illius Artis periti Cavatores, et recentioribus Graecis Καβιδάριοι, item Scalptores: istius Anaglyptae, Caelatores, de argento; Sculptores, de marmore; porro Toreutae vocati. Auctores tamen non raro ista confundunt, et Plin. l. 37. c. 10. scalpturas ectypas vocat, in quibus e plano eminent imagines, quae proprie sculpturae sunt vel caelatutae. Licet autem scalpere sit γλύφειν, scalprum tamen de caelo Argentariorum, quod γλύφανον vocant Graeci, vix Latinis dicitur, Scalpra enim Sutorum propria, Horatio Sermon. l. 2. Sat. 3. v. 106.
